Grades 3-6

Provides teachers with a unique instructional framework that can be used with any mathematics textbook or curriculum.  Multimedia and interactive content provides a compelling concept presentation that utilizes a variety of whiteboard resources; structured team practice using cooperative learning structures; and team and individual assessments.

Designed around a research-proven Cycle of Effective Instruction that engages students and extends their mathematical understanding, PowerTeaching Wired: Mathematics is a unique curricular framework that can be tailored to fit any math curriculum.

Active Instruction
The active instruction portion of a PowerTeaching Wired: Mathematics lesson combines direct instruction with techniques like Random Reporter to increase student engagement. Students receive small chunks of information from the teacher and then discuss the information in teams and partnerships, using kid language, until everyone makes connections and understands the concept and/steps.. The flipcharts are designed to facilitate this process by helping the teacher both introduce and later review a particular concept. The flipcharts also include embedded opportunities for informal assessments and, depending on what the assessment results show, the teacher can continue teaching or pull up additional flipcharts to assist in the reteaching of the concept.

Teamwork
Teamwork allows students to use either verbal or written language to, reason through, process, and explain their understanding of mathematical concepts. Conversations in which mathematical ideas are explored from multiple perspectives help the students sharpen their thinking and make connections. The teacher circulates among the teams, asks questions to either guide or extend the students’ thinking, and takes informal assessments to determine how well the students are understanding the lesson objective. Toward the end of teamwork, students work individually to solve problems, but they still have the support of their teammates should they have questions or need additional help.

Assessment and Celebration
During the assessment phase, each student is individually assessed to make sure that he or she has mastered the skill or strategy. Assessment consists of both informal and formal measures, observations, written tests, etc.

Throughout the lesson, teams are recognized and celebrated for successful skill or strategy usage. Students receive targeted feedback, along with cheers of praise for their accomplishments.
