W. K. Kellogg Foundation increased the number of children who are reading proficient by third grade for young students in Detroit.

In 2010, Success for All was granted the largest U.S. Department of Education’s Investing in Innovation scale up grant. Success for All was one of nearly 1,700 applicants to apply for the competition in its first year and one of just four to win a nearly $50 million scale-up grant, the highest award available.

The partnership with W. K. Kellogg Foundation allowed Success for All to implement and maintain the program in 14 Detroit Public Schools over the course of the five year grant. Success for All’s increased presence in Detroit Public Schools strongly influenced the programs scale up in other city schools. Success for All served ten additional schools in the Detroit area.

Kellogg’s support was uniquely responsible for helping provide Success for All to approximately 20,300 students from Detroit. Of those students about 17,200 or 85% were from low-income homes* and about 19,285 or 95% are minorities.

Starting in 2011, with W. K. Kellogg Foundation’s support, Detroit Public Schools began adopting Success for All for their struggling schools. Most Detroit Public Schools adopting Success for All started with less than 30% of students on reading level. Over the course of the implementation, schools showed an average increase in students reading at grade level of 19%, and some schools increased as much as 46%. That means that more than 2,700 additional students are now reading on grade level thanks to W.K. Kellogg’s Foundation support.

The goal of the Investing in Innovation Fund grant program was to expand the implementation of innovative practices that are demonstrated to have an impact on improving student achievement for under-represented populations. Success for All’s Investing in Innovation Scale up Grant was a success in both outcomes and dissemination with the help of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
